Can laser make my hair grow?



Let me tell you how this question usually arrives in my office...


Someone sits down, we talk about their skin, and then — almost as an aside, almost embarrassed — they run a hand through their hair and ask, "Is this laser cap thing real, or am I buying a very expensive night-light?"


It's a fair question. So let's treat it like one.


The short answer: yes, but hold onto your expectations


Low-level laser therapy — you'll see it called LLLT, red light therapy, or photobiomodulation — is not snake oil. It's also not a miracle. It lives in that honest middle ground where a lot of good medicine actually lives.


When researchers pool the randomized, placebo-controlled trials, people using these devices for pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) grow measurably more hair than people using an identical-looking fake device. That's not a testimonial or a before-and-after photo with suspicious lighting — that's a sham-controlled comparison, which is the closest thing we have to truth in this field (Perez et al., Dermatologic Surgery, 2025; Liu et al., Lasers in Medical Science, 2019).


In one well-run helmet study, the laser group gained about 42 hairs per square centimeter over 16 weeks while the fake-device group essentially flatlined (Yoon et al., Medicine, 2020). Another clever trial treated one side of the scalp and left the other as the control — same person, same genes, same shampoo — and the treated side won (Mai-Yi Fan et al., Dermatologic Surgery, 2018).




What's actually happening up there


Here's the part I find genuinely interesting. The light doesn't "burn away" anything or force hair out. It seems to talk to the machinery inside your follicle cells.


Specific red wavelengths (often around 650–660 nm) are absorbed by your mitochondria — the tiny power plants in every cell. That nudges them to make more energy, releases nitric oxide, improves local blood flow, and flips on growth-signaling pathways like Wnt/β-catenin. The net effect is that resting follicles are coaxed back into their growing phase and stay there longer (Avci et al., Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2014; Guo et al., Lasers in Medical Science, 2021; Han et al., Lasers in Medical Science, 2018).


Translation: it's less like fertilizer dumped on the lawn and more like turning the sprinklers back on for grass that had gone dormant.


Who tends to benefit


  • People with pattern hair loss — the gradual thinning at the crown or a receding hairline. This is where nearly all the good evidence sits, and it works in both men and women (Liu et al., 2019).

  • People who catch it earlier. Laser can wake up struggling follicles. It cannot resurrect follicles that are already gone. Bald, shiny scalp is not its territory.

  • People who are consistent. This is a habit, not an event.


For other kinds of hair loss — alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, chemotherapy-related shedding — the evidence is thin and I'd tell you so honestly (Perez et al., 2025).


The catch, and I always give you the catch


Results are real but modest. Nobody in these studies went from thinning to a lion's mane. Think "meaningfully fuller," not "transformed."


It also demands patience. You're committing to several sessions a week for months before you can judge anything. Hair grows on hair's timeline, not yours. And the market is a bit of a jungle — combs, caps, helmets, bands, all at wildly different price points and light doses. The good news is safety is excellent; across these trials, side effects were essentially nonexistent (Yoon et al., 2020; Mai-Yi Fan et al., 2018).



How I'd actually advise you


If you want to try it, I like laser as a team player rather than a solo act. The strongest strategy is to combine it with the proven workhorses — topical minoxidil, and for men, topical or oral finasteride — where laser appears to add to the effect rather than replace it (Darwin et al., Lasers in Medical Science, 2018).


And before you buy anything, get an actual diagnosis. "My hair is thinning" is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Thyroid issues, iron deficiency, and stress-related shedding all masquerade as pattern loss and are treated completely differently. A ten-minute conversation can save you months of shining a red light at the wrong problem.


The bottom line


Can laser make your hair grow? For pattern hair loss, the evidence says yes — modestly, safely, and only if you stick with it. It's not magic, but it's not nothing. And in medicine, "real but modest, with almost no downside" is a category worth respecting.


If you're thinking about it, let's look at your scalp, sort out what's actually causing the thinning, and build a plan you'll actually follow.


That last part — the follow-through — is usually what separates the people who grow hair from the people who own a nice gadget.
